Who are we?

We are a community-run organization advocating for all ages & abilities to be able to walk, bike, and ride transit by promoting equitable access policy and infrastructure. We advocate for a more walkable, bikeable, and mass transit friendly Midlands.

Damian Smith

Damian is an Ecologist and Wildland Firefighter with Colorado State University’s, Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands based Shaw AFB conducting controlled burns and fighting wildfires across the US. Aside from his natural resources/conservation background, He’s been a multimodal transit advocate for over decade. As utilitarian biker, he rides to visit friends, run errands enjoy food/drinks at local business, and just get around Columbia. He believes that everyone should have equitable access to safe infrastructure to take the bus, walk, bike, or drive.

Shirelle Hallum

Shirelle is a public health PhD student at the University of South Carolina with a focus on equity in the built environment. The underlying driver of her work is to inform policies and structures to encourage healthy design for all, regardless of age, race, ability, or income. She has a Bachelors of Public Health from the University of Texas and an MPH in Behavioral Science and Health Education from Emory University. She firmly believes that every person should easily be able to walk to their schools, work places, grocery stores, and recreation activities. On a day off you’ll find her going on a hike or walking to one of Columbia’s many local coffee shops.

Ian Day

Ian is a Columbia-area attorney with expertise in local government and environmental law and policy. You can see him commuting on his bicycle along Sumter Street during “rush” hour, or out walking with his family anywhere their feet can safely take them.

Jonathan Davis

JD is a recent alumnus of the University of South Carolina. He assists Mobile Midlands with communications and marketing, and helped organize and file the “Meet Your Next Mayor” video series.

Zach Pippin

Zach is a photographer and gardener who lives in Cayce, South Carolina. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, he worked for two South Carolina governors, with a stint at a failed tech startup, before leaving the public sector for good to his current position at Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Zach loves to ride his bike anywhere possible, and believes the Midlands has the potential to be the bike capital of the South if it would adopt Dutch-style design standards.
